May 17, Cape Cod Rail Trail

May 17, Cape Cod Rail Trail

The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a 25 mile paved bike path which runs through 6 towns from South Dennis to Wellfleet, Massachusetts.  The bike path travels the route of a previous rail line which is relatively flat and passes by some nice scenery and close to some village centers.  Signage is good, including mileage markers, signs for towns and food stops along the way.

The weather today is perfect for a ride, 70 degrees F, blue sky, dry air, insignificant wind, and bug free. It is Monday, two weeks before Memorial Day and the trail is being enjoyed by others, but far from crowded as it will be in the summer. At the road crossings, there are automatic sensors which alert the cars on the road to walkers and bikers ready to cross. There are an increasing number of electric bikes on the trails these days.  They are quiet and can be fast.  It is humbling to have people older than you go whizzing past… Linda wants one

Nickerson State Park is touched by the rail trail, it is a good place to stop for a picnic lunch. This is a beautiful wooded in-land park with seven named ponds, camp grounds, hiking trails, bike paths, and swimming. We had lunch and a cat nap at the Amphitheater, the program was local bird songs in surround sound.  We were the only attendees, zzzz.

  1. We enjoy our Missouri Katy Trail and the Michigan Hart-Montaque trail. Both are rail trails. And other bike paths as well. The electric bikes are tempting, but we are going to stick with the old fashioned kind for as long as we are able – for the exercise of it. Nickerson SP sounds great!
