The Cape Cod National Seashore was created in 1961 during the Kennedy presidency.  While this national project benefited Kennedy’s home district, it protected 44,000 acres of the outer Cape from development, and protects that land in a relatively natural state for future generations to enjoy. The seashore includes miles of Atlantic coast from Chatham to Provincetown, beaches, cape forest in its natural state, ponds and marsh lands.

The Province Lands is a section of the National seashore adjacent to Provincetown, and encompasses the largest dunes on the Cape.  Our draw to the Province lands are the paved bike paths which provide a great tour of the dunes, forest, ponds and beaches at the tip of the Cape. While the paths are paved, they are in places very hilly.  The challenge adds to the experience.  A picnic lunch is enjoyed sitting on the dunes and soaking up the warm sun.  After lunch, a cold soak of bare feet in the ocean is refreshing. This is a very unique bike path, not to be missed.

Provincetown has not changed very much in the last 20 years.  Art shops and artist sheds, eating and drinking, narrow streets lined with colorful buildings, and colorful people with a lively nightlife including drag queen shows.  Five years ago, Linda and I were in town and climbed to the top of the Pilgrim tower, which I highly recommend.  The tower is a wonderful granite structure with internal staircase and fabulous 360 degree views from the top. You will have to experience the tower on your own trip. There is an artist alley which is new to me, it is very colorful in many ways, and bounded by wonderful pavement and stonework.

  1. Very cool. We’ve done the bike trail there before. That’s a great time. I found having a bell on your bike helped a lot, as there were a lot of walkers.

We’ve never climbed the tower. We will have to try that!
