A really great (Superior) sightseeing cruise out of Munising harbor, Michigan, takes tourists and photographers to the waters edge of the Pictured Rocks on the steep cliff shore of Lake Superior. This stop is a highlight of any trip to the UP.  We have timed the voyage to late afternoon, a 4:00 departure at the end of September to hope to catch western warm rays illuminating the sand stone cliffs. Overcast conditions are not cooperating, but a few cracks in the cloud cover allow occasional rays to spot light the land and water.  The sandstone cliffs rise to heights of up to 200’ above the deep blue and turquoise waters of Lake Superior.  Eons of natural breakdown and erosion from waves, wind and rain have continuously shaped and reformed the cliffs.  Water seepage from above follows natural faults and weeps through the rock face.  Mineral content paints the rock surface with reds, oranges, blue and green, and white stains which streak sections of the rock with the appearance of paint brush art.   Several natural arches are highlights, along with cliffs which tower above the sightseeing boats. Caves and grottos are present in areas where the waves undercut the stone.  The waves in the ocean sized lakes can reach 15’ during storm conditions.  Today the waves are moderate, rocking the boat while trying to time the camera shutter to a crest or lull.

The captain surprises passengers by entering a narrow passage lined with jagged stone 80’ high, taking the boat within few feet of the abrupt ending.  Hikers on the North Country Trail above peer down stunned at the bold move of the boat.  Later, an eagle is perched high on a pine tree, no pic.

On return to dock at 6 PM, we are satisfied, tired and chilled, the cameras are tired also.  What a fabulous tour for shutterbugs!
